Replica artifacts and digital models
IAP team members have been thinking about ways to use 3D computer models of artifacts and archaeological sites, along with replica artifacts (hand made and 3D printed) to share archaeological information with people in Sachs Harbour. Under NWT law, all artifacts from NWT archaeological sites must be stored at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre in Yellowknife, making it difficult for Sachs Harbour community members to access them. Although not a replacement for the originals, digital models of artifacts and artifact replicas are one way to give Sachs Harbour community members access to these objects and sites. Many Sachs Harbour community members were excited by the possibilities of models and replicas, but they asked the IAP not to make copies of graves or artifacts associated with shamans, since it would be disrespectful.
