Survey of The Middle Lake Site
The Middle Lake Site (OkRn-3) consists of two Thule winter dwellings located between the coast and the southeastern corner of Middle Lake. Two radiocarbon dates from the site cluster tightly around the 1350 AD mark and overlap with the second phase of occupation at Cape Kellett (and perhaps also the earlier phase of occupation at Agvik).
Geophysical survey results
We spent only a single day at OkRn-3 and had time to conduct geophysical survey over only a small area of the site. Unfortunately, due to the very uneven ground, it was difficult to keep the instrument steady and the results are poor (Figure 1). We surveyed the site on our last day in the field, so were unable to return to redo it. Still, the magnetometer detected much of the structure of the dwellings. Again, due to the limited time at OkRn-3, only a small broad-interval susceptibility survey was carried out, centred over the two dwellings. As with the broad-interval surveys at the other sites, the results are too coarse to observe any obvious relationship between magnetic susceptibility and dwelling structure (Figure 2). Again, more readings might provide better results.
